What is Bactrim? Bactrim is a powerful antibiotic. What is marketed by the company Roche under the brand name Bactrim is a combination of the chemicals trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. It is sometimes thought of as a bacteriostatic antibiotic, and is sometimes called bacteriocidal as well (a bacteriocidal substance has a direct effect on bacteria while a bacteriostatic substance interferes with the growth of bacteria by affecting the production of bacterial protein, bacterial DNA or bacterial cellular metabolism.
What does Bactrim treat? Bactrim is used for treating meliodosis, shigellosis, traveller's diarrhea, Whipple's disease, and for fighting various kinds of bacterial infections. Bactrim is used for sinus infection, upper and lower respiratory tract infections, skin and wound infections, renal and urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal tract infections, septicaemias and more. By combining the two substances that have been listed above (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole) a greater effect can be brought about than you would get for either of the antibiotic substances individually. The downside of using Bactrim is that the substances in combination also cause a number of Bactrim side effects, and some of the side effects of Bactrim are serious.
Bactrim reactions can range from mild allergic reactions to severe liver damage and renal impairment as well as things such as mydrasis, agranulocystosis, myelosuppression, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and so on. Many of these side effects of Bactrim can be fatal, and there is a particularly strong risk of these kinds of dangerous side effects in the case of the elderly, which make up a large proportion of the people who use Bactrim. Compared to other antibiotics Bactrim may be a high risk. Ask your doctor to explain the difference between Bactrim and other similar types of antibiotic medications (such as Bactrim and Celebrex or Bactrim and MRSA).
Because of the high risk side effects that can result in fatalities for many elderly patients, the situations in which Bactrim is considered to be indicated have been reduced in the United Kingdom in recent years. Only take the standard dose for Bactrim in accordance with the directions that you have received from your doctor on how best to use Bactrim, and only buy Bactrim from a legitimate pharmacy - do not order a Bactrim overnight delivery from a company which does not require a prescription, because these kinds of orders are illegal and you want to make sure that the Bactrim which you are putting into your body is the right kind of medicine.
