Depakote is a drug used primarily to treat seizure and as a mood stabilizer for people with bipolar disorders. Some patients are also prescribed Depakote for migraines. Depakote is available in regular and extended-release form (Depakote ER). It is also sold under the generic name divalproex sodium.
Depakote has both minor and major side effects. Some common minor side effects are weight gain, hair loss, and stomach upset. Weight gain does not occur as frequently on lower doses of Depakote, or on Depakote ER. Major side effects of Depakote include fainting, double vision, and bloody urine. Pancreatitis (inflamed pancreas) and liver damage are also possible, and can be identified by the following symptoms: dark urine, low fever, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin). Contact your doctor immediately if you experience major side effects. Another problem some Depakote users may develop is osteoporosis, a loss of bone mass which weakens the bones, leading to higher possibility of bone fracture.
Other people may experience sexual side effects with Depakote. In men, Depakote may reduce the number of mature sperm in the semen. Depakote is a class "D" drug , so women who are pregnant or nursing should not take it, due to the possibility of birth defects and passing the medication to an infant through breast milk. Women who become pregnant while on Depakote should notify their doctor immediately.
There are some things you should avoid when taking Depakote. Any medicine that makes you drowsy should not be taken with Depakote. Also, you should take care to avoid excess sun exposure and wear sunscreen, as Depakote makes the skin more sensitive and therefore more likely to burn. Tanning beds should be avoided for the same reason. Alcohol should not be used with Depakote.
People with a history of head injury, previous coma, or HIV infection should not take Depakote. Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions. A family history of urea disorders or SIDS should also be mentioned to your doctor, as these conditions may require your doctor to adjust your dosage or recommend a different medication.
Follow your doctor's dosage instructions carefully when taking Depakote. Sudden Depakote withdrawal may increase your chance of having seizures, so do not stop taking Depakote without your doctor's approval. Report any changes in your condition or any new medications to your doctor immediately, so he or she may adjust your regimen as needed.
