Evista is a medication that reduces or prevents bone loss. It is commonly prescribed to treat bone loss after menopause, but can be prescribed for women who have not yet gone through menopause. Evista is available as a generic under the name raloxifene. It is given in tablet form. Evista is commonly used because it seems to work without increasing the patient's risk of breast and uterine cancers. Also, unlike other osteoporosis drugs like Fosamax, Evista has no dietary restrictions, and is generally very well tolerated.
Side effects of the drug Evista include weight gain, hot flashes, and muscle soreness. Some Evista users also report experiencing hair loss. More serious Evista problems include chest pain, sharp leg pain, and vision changes. These serious side effects may indicate the formation of a blood clot, and immediate medical attention is required. If you have to have any type of surgery, especially surgery that will require you to be on bed rest during recovery, you should mention that you are taking Evista. You may need to stop Evista if you are put on bed rest, because the lack of movement may increase your chances of developing a dangerous blood clot. Severe allergic reactions may occur, and also require immediate treatment. Evista is a class "X" drug, so it should never be taken by pregnant women, as it is known to cause birth defects. You should use a reliable birth control method to prevent pregnancy while you are taking Evista, but if it fails and you do become pregnant, notify your doctor immediately. Breastfeeding is not recommended while you are taking Evista, because it is unknown whether the medication passes into breast milk, and could therefore affect the nursing infant.
Evista works to treat bone loss in much the same way as traditional hormone replacement therapy does, but without as many risks. However; since risks do still exist, you should only take Evista while under a doctor's care. Let your doctor know if you have any medical conditions, especially cancer, high blood pressure (hypertension), or a history of blood clots. These conditions may prevent you from taking Evista. Also inform your doctor of any other medications you take, including over the counter drugs and vitamin or herbal supplements, to avoid possibly life-threatening drug interactions. If your doctor decides Evista is right for you, there are many online sources that offer Evista with next day delivery or overnight delivery, in case you cannot purchase it at your local pharmacy.
