Fosamax

Fosamax is a bisphosphonate drug used to slow bone loss and increase bone mass. It is commonly prescribed to treat osteoporosis in women who have gone through menopause, and also for people with certain bone diseases. Another version of Fosamax, known as Fosamax D, is also available. Fosamax D has the same ingredients as Fosamax, and also contains vitamin D3.

Side effects from Fosamax may be minor, like heartburn, headache, or constipation, or major, such as difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or jaw pain. All major side effects or allergic reactions should be cause for immediate medical attention. The side effect of jaw pain is particularly important, as it may be a sign of osteonecrosis of the jaw (bone loss in the jaw). Fosamax users who have or have had cancer, dental problems, or anemia may be more prone to bone loss in the jaw. Fosamax is a class "C" drug, so women who are pregnant or nursing should not take it. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant or plan to begin breastfeeding while taking Fosamax. Fosamax may have adverse effects in patients with existing medical conditions like kidney disease or ulcers. Tell your doctor if you have these or any other medical conditions, so that your doctor can determine if you should take Fosamax, and what the proper dosage is for you. Many common drugs like aspirin or antacids may interact badly with Fosamax, so your doctor must also know about all medications and supplements you take before prescribing Fosamax for you. Patients who cannot sit upright for at least 30 minutes after taking Fosamax will not be able to take it. You must sit upright for at least that long to minimize Fosamax's contact with your esophagus, to avoid the formation of ulcers there.

Fosamax medication must be taken exactly as prescribed. It is possible to overdose on Fosamax. Symptoms of an overdose include seizure, muscle cramps or tightening (especially in the face), and diarrhea. An overdose of Fosamax requires emergency medical care. You should only take Fosamax under a doctor's care.

Fosamax is offered with overnight delivery or next day delivery through many online pharmacies. For those who cannot afford Fosamax, its manufacturer, Merck, offers a patient assistance program. You may sign up for the program on Merck's Fosamax website. In addition, you may also visit the website to obtain a Fosamax coupon, good for one free month of Fosamax with a valid doctor's prescription.
