Gemfibrozil is a prescription drug used to lower triglycerides in the blood, or to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Gemfibrozil may also prevent pancreas disease in some patients. It is commonly sold under the brand name Lopid. A usual dosage of Gemfibrozil is 600 mg. Gemfibrozil is usually prescribed as a last resort, when diet and exercise have failed to control the patient's condition. Your doctor may not prescribe Gemfibrozil if you have a drinking problem or are excessively overweight, unless you stop drinking and lose weight with no change in your condition.
Patients may experience side effects when taking Gemfibrozil. Minor side effects, including nausea, rash, and constipation, should be reported to your doctor. Some patients report that Gemfibrozil causes hair loss. Rarely, Gemfibrozil may cause serious side effects, like appendicitis or severe allergic reaction. These serious side effects need immediate medical care, as they may be fatal if left untreated. Gemfibrozil is a class "C" drug, meaning that women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take it. If you want to become pregnant or begin breastfeeding while you are taking Gemfibrozil, you should discuss the risks with your doctor. You should not use alcohol with Gemfibrozil, nor should you smoke while taking this medication. Patients with certain medical conditions, including kidney or liver disease, may not be able to take Gemfibrozil. Discuss all your medical conditions with your doctor. Certain medications must not be taken in conjunction with Gemfibrozil, especially other statins, or cholesterol drugs, such as Lipitor, to avoid dangerous drug interactions. You should also not take Gemfibrozil with any other drug that can cause drowsiness. Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, even over the counter drugs or vitamin and herbal supplements.
Gemfibrozil should never be taken without a prescription or without regular follow up visits to your doctor. You will need to be monitored for signs of certain serious disorders that can be caused by taking Gemfibrozil. These conditions include liver disorders, gallstones, and blood diseases. You must take Gemfibrozil exactly as prescribed to avoid overdose. Symptoms of overdose may include abdominal or joint pain, and require immediate medical care. Do not take more of this medication than you are supposed to because it seems to not be working. It may take a month or more for the full effects of Gemfibrozil to kick in. Your doctor can give you more information on Gemfibrozil, its risks, and benefits.
