Halcion

Halcion is a hypnotic drug used for the short term treatment of insomnia. Halcion is generally prescribed for a week to ten days, but never more than one month. Halcion may also be used as a painkiller or for oral anesthesia. Generic Halcion is available under the name Triazolam.

Adverse effects of Halcion range from minor, like dizziness, drowsiness, and blurred vision, to major, such as anxiety, memory loss, and confusion. Let your doctor know about any minor side effects you experience, and seek emergency medical care for major side effects or allergic reactions. You should not use alcohol with Halcion. Halcion is a class "X" drug, and should never be taken by pregnant women, to avoid harm to their unborn babies. You should use a reliable birth control method while taking Halcion, but if it fails and you become pregnant, notify your doctor immediately. Women who are breastfeeding should also never take Halcion. If you have certain medical conditions like liver or kidney disease, lung disorders, or seizure-causing conditions, discuss the risks with your doctor before taking Halcion. He or she should be made aware of all your other medical conditions as well. Medications such as antidepressants, antifungals, and any drug that causes drowsiness may prevent you from taking Halcion. Let your doctor know about all medications you take, even over the counter and vitamin or herbal supplements, to avoid dangerous or fatal drug interactions.

One of the major problems with Halcion is its recent widespread use as a "date rape" drug. Halcion gained notoriety when it was used by husband and wife serial killers in Canada to incapacitate at least one of their victims prior to her rape and death. Halcion is commonly put in the victim's drink, where it cannot be seen or tasted, especially if the victim is drinking a sweet or very strong drink. Halcion will cause the victim to black out, and usually have no idea of what is being done to her or what is going on around her. The victim may awaken with no suspicion that anything has happened to her, or she may realize she has been raped if she was injured, or if she is missing clothing or is in a strange place. Women are strongly advised to watch their drinks at all times. Never leave your drink unattended for any reason, including to go to the restroom. Women should also look out for each other, and come to a friend's aid if she seems to be acting strangely, or plans to leave the bar with a stranger.
