Ketoprofen is an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) used to treat inflammation and pain, such as menstrual cramps. Ketoprofen is available in capsule or patch forms for general pain. Ketoprofen cream and Ketoprofen gel formulas are also available for direct topical use on the inflamed areas.
Minor side effects of Ketoprofen include dry mouth, rash, and headache. Tell your doctor if you experience any of these minor side effects, or any other unusual or bothersome symptom. Major side effects and allergic reactions require emergency medical care. Such major side effects include jaundice (yellowing of the skin), decrease in urination, or chest pain. You should not drink alcohol while taking Ketoprofen. Ketoprofen is a class "B" drug, so it is not thought to cause harm when taken by pregnant or nursing women. However, women who are pregnant or nursing, or planning to become pregnant or begin nursing, should discuss the risks of Ketoprofen with their doctors before beginning the medication. Patients who have asthma, heart disease, or those who are recovering from heart bypass surgery, may not be able to take Ketoprofen. Discuss your medical history in depth with your doctor before he or she prescribes Ketoprofen for you. Some medications may also interact or interfere with Ketoprofen, such as blood thinners or aspirin, so it is important to tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, to avoid such interactions.
Ketoprofen, along with other NSAID's, may increase your risk of developing certain serious medical conditions. The heart and digestive system are particularly prone to developing problems. The longer you take Ketoprofen, the more likely it is that these conditions will occur. Older patients are at greater risk for these conditions, so they may require closer monitoring by their doctor.
Overdose of Ketoprofen is possible, and requires immediate medical treatment. The symptoms of overdose include vomiting, fainting, or even coma. This can be a fatal condition, so the symptoms of overdose should not be ignored. Keep Ketoprofen and all other drugs out of the reach of children. Any Ketoprofen that has expired should be properly discarded to prevent others from taking it.
You should never buy Ketoprofen with no prescription. Because so many drugs may interact with Ketoprofen, and such serious side effects and conditions may develop, it is important to be under a doctor's care while using this medication. Keep all follow up appointments with your doctor, and consent to any test he or she wants to run to monitor your condition.
