Levoxyl

Levoxyl is a synthetic form of the body's thyroid hormone. It is generally prescribed to patients whose bodies do not produce enough thyroid hormone naturally. Levoxyl may also be given to treat goiter patients. Zoloft and Levoxyl are often prescribed together, as Zoloft may lower thyroid levels. Levoxyl in generic form is known as Levothyroxine. Your dosage will be based upon your own thyroid levels, but the maximum dose of Levoxyl is 300 mcg.

Negative effects of Levoxyl are rare, but may occur. Hair loss is the most common minor side effect, but is usually only experienced when patients first begin taking the medication. Symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or irregular heartbeat are more serious, and require emergency medical care, as they may be signs of overstimulation of the thyroid. Levoxyl is a class "A" drug, which means studies have shown it is safe for pregnant and nursing women to take. You should let your doctor know if you become pregnant, as your Levoxyl dosage may need to be changed. Patients with diabetes or certain heart diseases may not be able to take Levoxyl. Tell your doctor if you suffer from these or any other medical conditions. Certain medications, especially blood pressure or seizure medications, may interact poorly with Levoxyl, so your doctor must be made aware of all medications you are taking along with Levoxyl, including over the counter and vitamin or herbal supplements.

Levoxyl is not likely to cause weight gain. In fact, since Levoxyl speeds up your metabolism, you are more likely to lose weight while taking the medication. Some online Levoxyl forums are full of users that recommend it highly as a weight loss drug. But Levoxyl is not intended for use as a weight loss medication, and using it for this purpose may be extremely dangerous.

Levoxyl must never be taken outside of a doctor's care. Your doctor will perform regular blood testing to ensure your thyroid levels remain within normal range. He or she will use this information to raise or lower your dosage of Levoxyl as needed. Pregnant women will undergo more frequent testing, as pregnancy may change your thyroid levels. Diabetic patients may need to have their diabetes medication dosage adjusted as well, so if you have diabetes, you should monitor your blood sugar levels more closely when beginning to take Levoxyl. Patients must not attempt Levoxyl withdrawal on their own. Your doctor can give your more information on Levoxyl.
