Metoclopramide

Metoclopramide is the generic name for Reglan, which is a medication used for a variety of stomach problems. One of the most common illnesses for which Metoclopramide is prescribed is acid reflux and indigestion (typically only in severe cases. Another common illness that Metoclopramide is used for is diabetic gastric stasis. The purpose of Metoclopramide is to increase the speed with which the stomach digests food, and to help speed the process of the stomach being emptied into the intestines. This helps prevent acid back-up, as well as strengthening the muscles within the stomach and esophagus so that the patient will experience less pain and discomfort after eating than they would without Metoclopramide.

Metoclopramide and thyroid conditions should be monitored by a doctor, and there are many Metoclopramide side effects that should be watched for. One of the most severe side effects is muscle spasms of any sort, and if these occur, the patient should stop taking the medicine and contact a doctor immediately. Other less severe side effects of Metoclopramide can include nausea and other stomach problems as well as drowsiness. The drowsiness can become more intensified when mixed with alcohol or some other medications, so it is important to take precautions and not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy. Metoclopramide is safe during pregnancy according to the FDA, and has not been known to cause any type of birth defects. The medication can, however, be passed through breast milk to the baby, so before beginning the medicine, you will want to make sure your doctor is aware that you are a breastfeeding mother.

Metoclopramide isn’t just for people, however. There is a form of the medication that can help animals as well. Metoclopramide and feline vomiting have been studied and have shown great success so far. Metoclopramide isn’t just for cats, though. Metoclopramide for dogs is also available. The type of Metoclopramide used for dogs can help with a variety of digestion difficulties. It is also important to remember that you can’t simply take your prescribed Metoclopramide and give it to your dog. If you will be using Metoclopramide on an animal, you will need to take your pet to the vet and make sure this is the right medication. Your vet will be able to tell you whether to give this medicine or a different kind to your pet. This way, you will be helping your animal’s stomach problems without potentially causing harm.
