Pravachol

Pravachol is a type of medicine referred to as an HMG CoA reductase inhibitor. This basically means that it limits the production of cholesterol within the blood. By doing this, it keeps the level of both cholesterols lower and prevents hardening of the arteries that can lead to heart attacks. Pravachol can be used on patients who have previous histories of heart problems, or it can be used as a preventative measure in those who have high cholesterol but have yet to have a heart attack.

There are many types of cholesterol lowering medications available, and which one will work best for you can only be determined through trial and error. There are some medicines other than Pravachol that will work better for certain patients, such as those with certain illnesses or conditions, but as far as how your body will react to Pravachol or any other medicine, it will have to be determined by trying one and going from there. One popular medication that is often compared to Pravachol is Lipitor versus Pravachol. When comparing Lipitor vs. Pravachol, some considerations will be the side effects, as well as any diseases that might conflict with each medication. Your doctor will make the decision of whether to start you on Lipitor or Pravachol first, and if you have a bad experience with one while comparing Pravachol vs. Lipitor, your doctor may switch you to the other. By keeping both Lipitor and Pravachol as options for lowering cholesterol, the odds that you will end up with excellent results and minimal side effects are much greater. There are other medicines that are often compared with Pravachol, such as Pravachol versus Lovastatin. When comparing Lovastatin versus Pravachol, the same steps will be taken. Your health will be considered first, and then it will just be trial and error to see which medication works best for your body.

Pravachol is available as the brand name, or to be more affordable, you can purchase the generic Pravachol. This is called Pravastatin, and it works identical to Pravachol with a lower cost. There can be many side effects of Pravachol medication, and the most common can include headache, insomnia and a cough. Pravachol and weight gain is also not uncommon. More severe Pravachol side effects can include liver damage, allergic reactions and more. Pravachol toxicity will vary depending on the dosage amount, and the most common dose is Pravachol 20 mg. Certain foods or drinks should be watched while taking this drug, such as Pravachol grapefruit cocktails, or Pravachol and alcohol, which can further damage to the liver.
