Sucralfate is an oral medication that can be used in the treatment and prevention of ulcers. What is the mechanism of action of Sucralfate? Sucralfate, marketed as Sucramal and Carafate, is a gastrointestinal drug that binds to the hydochloric acid in the stomach and forms a protective layer on the ulcer to protect against acid, bile salts and enyzmes. In addition to ulcer treatment, Sucralfate can also treat gastroesophageal refluc disease and stress related ulcers.
Sucralfate Dosing And Directions
Sucralfate should be prescribed by a doctor who has full knowledge of any other medications you are taken and any other medical conditions which could be a risk. Some of these may include pregnancy and breast feeding, certain allergies, kidney problems or intestinal blockage. In general, Sucralfate should be taken on an empty stomach at least one hour before eating or two hours afterward. Antacids should not be taken for at least a half hour before or after taking the medication. The complete time span of healing may take from four to eight weeks, and Sucralfate should be taken for the full course of treatment, even if you feel better early on.
Possible side effects of the drug include constipation and dizziness, including a whirling sensation. Severe side effects may be possible if there is an allergic reaction and these may include rash, hives, difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest and a swelling of the lips and tongue. Sucralfate has been compared to diphenhydramine syrup in the past with similar reactions and no significant differences between patients treating ulcer symptoms.
Sucralfate For Dogs?
There is not a veterinary version of Sucralfate available as of this time, as it is a medication designed for humans. However, Sucralfate has been used on dogs before to treat animal ulcers. Because the medication is powerful, the “unofficial” recommendation is ¼ to 1 gram per pet every six to eight hours. The smaller the dog (or cat) the dosage may be reduced to ¼ to ½ gram. As with humans, Sucralfate is best used when taken on an empty stomach. The tablet can be easily dissolved in water by mixing well. It is important to consult a veterinarian before administering this drug to an animal, since prescription and length of treatment will vary depending on any adverse effects. Usually, pet owners are told to keep the pet on the medication for a full course of recovery, even if symptoms lessen.
