Synthroid is a brand name of the drug Levothyroxine, also known as L-thyroxine, that is used to treat low thyroid activity as well as to suppress various types of goiters. It may also be used in surgery or in the prevention of certain types of thyroid cancer. Synthroid is a thyroid hormone, and so these hormones are released by the thyroid gland so that they can regulate the body's metabolism. If the gland is under active then it will not produce enough hormone, thus slowing down a person's metabolism. Synthroid can be taken to restore this imbalance.
Synthroid Precautions
Synthroid, or Levothyroxine tablets as the generic brand is called, should not be taken alone, nor with diet pills to treat obesity. This is because large Synthroid doses combined with diet pills may be toxic. In addition, patients who have a history of heart attack, chest pain or adrenal gland problems may further be at risk if taking Synthroid. This is why it's best to have a doctor prescribe the medicine, so that he or she can learn any preexisting medical conditions that may interact with Synthroid dosage. Allergic reactions, pregnancy (or future pregnancy) other medication (including beta-blockers and aluminum salts) and some herbal supplements may also interact with Synthroid. Taking synthroid and Topamax together has also been known to be a risk.
The dosage for Synthroid is prescribed by a doctor but generally recommended as follows: take recommended dosage on an empty stomach, (usually one hour before breakfast) and with a full glass of water. It is important to take Synthroid with water, as the tablet could swell and disintegrate in the throat causing choking or gagging. The dosage should be taken at a selected time of the day, and repeated at that time each day. There may be some foods, as well as OTC medicines that should be spaced apart from Synthroid, such as antacids, iron and calcium supplements. Synthroid strengths are observed when the tablets are taken regularly. It may take several weeks before symptoms alleviate or desist and for the most part, Synthroid will have to be taken for life.
Synthroid Problems
Possible side effects of Synthroid include anxiety and mood swings, diarrhea, flushing, muscle weakness hair loss, insomnia and vomiting. Side effects are possible, but largely depend upon the individual and the treatment. Some patients have no side effects while others may experience uncomfortable or severe side effects. Some serious symptoms are related to an allergic reaction to the medication and may include: rash or hives, difficulty in breathing, a tightness in the chest, swelling in the face, drastic changes in appetite, pounding in the chest, seizures and extreme weight loss or gain. Other issues to be aware of, and to tell your doctor, include Synthroid and heart palpations and Synthroid and heartburn. There many be Synthroid withdrawal symptons, particularly if you take Synthroid after a thyroidectomy, since the body can become very weak without the regular amount of thyroid hormones.
