Zantac is the brand name of the drug known as Ranitidine, a histamine H2-receptor antagonist. It may be sold generically as Ranitidine tablets or capsules, or by many other brand names. The key ingredient however is Ranitidine, which reduces acid in the stomach by blocking the histamine that stimulates stomach acid production. Zantac is used for treating and preventing ulcers, as well as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and Erosive Esophagitis.
How To Use Zantac
Zantac is available by prescription and should be taken as directed by a doctor. Why is this? A doctor is aware of all of a patient's medical history, current medications and any other medical conditions that might otherwise interfere with the Zantac drug. Some other medications, such as Cephalosporins itraconazoles, ketoconazoles, or quinolones could interact with Zantac and so it is advised for patients take Zantac two hours before or after these other medications. If you feel well sooner than expected do not stop taking the treatment until the complete course has ended. If you experience stomach pain, take some antacids, as suggested by your doctor. Try to stay on schedule – if you miss a dose, get back on schedule and do not try to double dose.
Zantac Side Effects
There are some side effects possible with Zantac, including drowsiness or dizziness, constipation or diarrhea, headache, a whirling motion, sleeplessness, stomach pain and vomiting. If there is an allergic reaction then symptoms may be more severe; these could include: difficulty in breathing, a tightness in the chest, changes in heart rate, confusion, severe stomach pain or a yellowing of the eyes. Some patients have reported weight loss with taking Zantac. You should not take Zantac while pregnant because of the possibility of harming the fetus. Infants, as well as elderly patients, are not supposed to take Zantac because of the possibility for increased side effects and because of their delicate systems.
Substitutes For Zantac
If you are not looking forward to taking Zantac long term, there are substitutes you can take. One of these is Prilosec, a similar drug to Zantac. Prilosec is a Proton Pump Inhibitor and works to shut down acid production in the stomach. They are taken just before meals and are most effective during the day. Zantac is an H2-Receptor Blocker and seems to work better than Prilosec at night.
There is also Zantac OTC (Over The Counter) drugs available as Zantac 75 and Zantac 150. However, pack sizes larger than Zantac 150mg, such as Zantac 600 may require a prescription. Visit DrugStore.com for more information on Zantec RX and OTC.
